Leg Cramps are more than just a bother. Often it happens at night, sometimes all night, and disrupts sleep. The pain can be intense at times as well.

So what can we do to prevent this situation from happening again and again?


Avoid All Animal Protein

Avoid all animal proteins. This includes red meat, chicken, fish, and most dairy (except for a bit of milk in your coffee if need be).

Why? Animal proteins produce acid in the body, this acid can accumulate in the muscles. It's important to maintain an alkaline diet to avoid inflammation and muscle cramping. 

If you really need to eat animal proteins make sure they are cooked in water (not fried). Opt for hard boiled eggs instead of fish, beef or chicken. 

Note: never eat animal protein after 6pm!


Drink More Water

Staying hydrated is very important. Be sure to drink water (add a pinch of sea salt or bamboo salt - which is very high in minerals to add electrolytes). 


Eat More Fruit & Vegetables

Some foods are high in electrolytes as well: coconut water, papaya, oranges, avocadoes and many more.


Stand for 5 Minutes

Stand up and walk around for 5 minutes every hour to increase circulation


Massage

Massage your legs twice daily - when you wake up and especially important: before bed.

3) Take long walks in nature

Walks in nature lowers cortisol.

5) Engage in Physical/social activities that bring you joy- this could include dance, karate, art classes, tai chi, anything that you find fun and relaxing

Ideally all lights and devices should be turned off a minimum of 30 minutes before bed to ensure we get good sleep. Sleep helps flush cortisol out of the body.
